2.12. Organisation of the atlas - collection of maps

Base map. The set of thematic maps of an area should be preceded by a basic map of the area made at the same scale as the thematic maps.

The basic map of the area contains only the basic marks, especially line marks, which "organise the space of the map", form the reference system. Learning this basic layout allows the student to locate further objects encountered when reading thematic maps of the area.

The common legend of a set of maps - the atlas - can be printed on a separate sheet rather than on each map. In order to read all the characters of a particular map, the student may use at most two sheets at the same time, i.e. the legend on the sheet of the map being viewed and a separate sheet of the legend. It is permissible to recommend the use of two legends: on the sheet of the map in question and on the base map sheet. It is not acceptable to recommend that a pupil use legends on three sheets, i.e. a sheet of the map being read, a sheet of the legend and a sheet of another map of the area, e.g. a base map. It is advisable that in a collection of maps, the legend placed on the map sheet should have a permanent place on it.

As Polish tyflocartography develops, maps in previously unused scales, new problems, new expectations and solutions are likely to emerge. New technologies are also likely to emerge. All this will, in time, require updated standards. For the time being, adhering to the above standards when adapting and creating tylfocartography can go a long way in easing the difficulty of reading maps for blind students.
