2.7 Inscriptions and captions

Inscriptions and captions of the colour version of the map should be made in a font without serifs and shading of at least 16 pt. in a colour contrasting with the background and placed in a conventional manner.

All braille lettering and captions on the map sheet (in the legend and in the map content) should be in Marburg Medium braille font or in a font with very similar parameters.

Due to the size of the Braille letters, only certain objects marked on some maps can be signed with their full name. Most often, abbreviated names are placed on the maps. The already established abbreviation system should be maintained. Use the same keys and the same abbreviations for proper names as used in earlier publications.

Captions, whether in Braille or plain print, should be as close as possible to the object being captioned, with a distance to ensure legibility. Captions shall be placed in the area being described. If the Braille inscription does not fit into a small area, it shall be placed in an adjacent area close to the border and preceded by a ' (point 6).

Depending on the technological possibilities of printing, braille and colour enlarged lettering should overlap or be in close proximity.

In the case of atlas publications, the full list of keys and abbreviation explanations used should be in a separate booklet, as this will facilitate the use of abbreviation explanations while reading the map. Where possible, abbreviations should also be explained on the map sheet or drawing.
